Central Virginia offers both benefits and challenges to the home gardener. We are blessed with regular and abundant rainfall, relatively mild winters, and fairly nutrient-rich soils. On the other hand, we must contend with insect pests, pathogenic fungi that thrive in our red clay soils, erratic late frosts, and increasingly common bouts of strong wind and heavy rains.
Any plant, be it tree, shrub, or groundcover, must be resilient to our challenges and able to capitalize on our local boons. A thriving garden starts with a selection of sensible plants.
The plants on the following pages are some of our favorites for this area. Some may be familiar standards of the dinner table, others may appear more exotic. All are excellent, and will feed and delight yourselves and your grandchildren for many generations to come.
